A few habits reduce risk substantially. Stay in the kitchen when cooking with oil or high heat. Keep towels, packaging, and loose sleeves away from burners. Turn pot handles inward. Clean grease accumulation from range hoods, burners, and oven interiors, since built-up residue provides fuel.

Response matters as much as prevention. A grease fire gets smothered with a lid or a Class K extinguisher, never water, which vaporizes instantly and sprays burning oil outward. A fire inside an oven or microwave is best handled by shutting the appliance off and keeping the door closed.

Heating Equipment Drives Winter Risk

Fires tied to heating cluster heavily in the coldest months, and space heaters cause a disproportionate share.

Portable heaters need three feet of clearance from anything combustible, including bedding, upholstery, curtains, and clothing. They should plug directly into wall outlets rather than power strips or extension cords, sit on hard flooring rather than carpet, and be switched off before sleeping or leaving a room.

Central systems require annual professional service. Furnaces accumulate dust and debris, heat exchangers develop cracks, and blocked vents create both fire and carbon monoxide hazards. That inspection is inexpensive relative to what it prevents.

Fireplaces and Chimneys Need Annual Attention

Wood-burning appliances create a specific hazard that builds gradually and invisibly.

According to the NFPA, U.S. fire departments respond to about 22,300 chimney fires annually. Most stem from creosote, the tar-like residue that accumulates on flue walls as wood burns. Once deposits reach sufficient thickness, they can ignite and burn at temperatures high enough to crack masonry or spread into surrounding framing.
